January and the new year will be here again before we know it along with fresh opportunities for changes that can help us to live our lives more comfortably. One of the things that many people desire is to reduce the clutter in their lives.

In fact, clutter can take a serious toll on our concentration and increase the amount of stress we experience. All those piles of things compete for our attention and make it difficult to focus on the really important things that truly deserve our attention.

Decluttering your bathroom and keeping it that way doesn’t need to be a major chore. Instead, a small series of simple habit changes can make the difference. Continue reading

  • The Tax Advantages of Renovating Your Business Bathrooms Now

If your company is contemplating making building improvements in the near future, it might be better to think about doing it sooner rather than later. When your business needs interior upgrades, it's important to consider the impact these renovations can make for your clients, guests, and employees. Equally important is your timing. This is true whether your company is in hospitality, retail, restaurants, office buildings, or a small business.

Although you may be aware of the high return on investment for commercial restroom renovations, there are many other compelling reasons to consider one. These may include making them ADA compliant and code compliant, along with better efficiency and an updated appearance. Additionally, updating your bathrooms will reflect well on your building and your company, in addition to offering increased incentive to prospective buyers should you wish to sell in the future. • Small Bathroom Tips: Creating a Light and Bright Feeling

Even a small bathroom can be made to feel lighter, brighter and more spacious. In fact, lightening up can help a room be more inviting, relaxing, and can help make getting ready a breeze. Whether you are considering a remodel or simply making small changes, here are some terrific ideas.

    Small Bathroom Tip #1

The easiest way to brighten up a room is with natural light. If your small bathroom already has a window, lightening up by removing bulky window coverings can make all the difference. Consider decorative textured glass or swapping to lightly opaque or bottom-up window shades to preserve privacy while still providing light and views. Continue reading

    The Basics: Holiday Houseguests

Remember, it’s often the little things that make a big impact, but don’t forget the basics.  The most vital step is to ensure that your bathroom is thoroughly decluttered, clean, and shining. • A Child’s Bathroom for Your Expanding Family

Couples often spend a great deal of time planning and preparing for having a child, but planning for an expanding family may involve more than just buying small outfits, furniture, and equipment. Having children is a joyous experience, but even the best relationships can be strained during the transition from being a couple to becoming a family. Although you may be prepared for a lack of sleep and some extra laundry, you may not have considered the need for a child’s bathroom.

By making a bathroom into a room of their own, you can recover your own bathroom time, space, and privacy. You’ll likely find that a separate child’s bathroom will result in a much more harmonious household.

You may need to consider finding a clever space to change into an added child’s bathroom, but it may be surprising how little area is really required. Often, it can be found simply by partitioning off a small section of just about any room, utilizing the area under a staircase, using a walk-in closet, or even space at the end of a hallway. Additionally, if your home currently has only one bath, adding a second bath to your home as a child’s bathroom may increase the resale value of your home. Of course, the real value is the one you'll get daily from its use.

If you already have another bathroom, your goal should be to create a fun and interesting child’s bathroom where they can also relax. Use colorful, happy décor to encourage them to enjoy their room. Consider different choices for ways to use these elements that can easily be changed as your children grow and their tastes change. We recommend using an undermount stainless steel sink for a durable, safe sink with the promise of easy clean-ups.

Make sure to put low towel bars or hooks within easy reach for them to hang towels. Install adjustable showerheads that can be lowered for small children and raised as they grow and provide easily accessible areas for storage to prevent clutter within your child’s bathroom.

Safety is, of course, another major consideration. Small feet can slip easily on large tiles, so be sure to use small tiles with lots of grout lines to reduce the danger. Drain and faucet covers are important safety features to add so children don't hurt themselves on sharp metal edges or accidentally turn on hot water.

  • Creating Modern Bathroom Drama – In a Great Way!

    Modern Bathroom Remodeling

If you’ve been considering remodeling your modern bathroom, you may have been surprised by the dark colors, including black, navy blue,s and charcoal grays appearing in some of the most inspiring rooms. In the past, these hues have often been dismissed by the idea that they might make a room appear too small, not allow enough light, or seem too drab.

Add huge drama and depth as an alternative to the perhaps sterile-looking all-white modern bathrooms that have become so commonplace by using or combining these shades appropriately. If you’re ready for an extraordinary modern bathroom or if you’re simply looking for ways to incorporate these colors for a modern and updated look, here are some terrific ideas.

Tired of the All White Bathroom?

If you've had the all white aesthetic for too long, it can get old. Easily update to a classic black and white palette without a major expense or remodeling. Changing a plain white sink out to a sleek and modern, square or circular-shaped, above-counter vessel in black can make a great addition to any sized modern bathroom; try The Lacee 2802 in Obisidian. Double the effect and add extra get-ready space by adding double sinks side by side. Then, consider changing a boring vanity countertop to a sleek black granite one.

    Pops of Color

If you want to incorporate smaller pops of color into your modern bathroom, matte black finishes are showing up everywhere, including on mirror frames, plumbing fixtures, lighting options, and décor. Wallpaper is another terrific option, adding light touches in a subtle pattern or bold vertical stripes.

    Not Just Black and White

Of course, black or black and white are not the only worthy options to examine. In fact, mixing pale grays and deep navy blues, especially when mixed with natural wood finishes, can create a moody, soothing, yet modern feel. Even modern bathrooms that currently have a splash of color can benefit from the boldness and style that the addition of black or charcoal gray can add. The whole trick is in balancing the additions for a harmonic effect.

With so many exciting looks available today, there's sure to be one that fits your personality and style. Seeking professional advice can give you fresh new ideas and may help you successfully attain the look you choose.

DECOLAV can help you achieve the modern bathroom you want with our quality styling and expert engineering. • 4 Simple Tricks For Keeping A Clean Bathroom

The best method to keep a clean bathroom is to do it routinely. Whether easy to clean stainless steel sinks or vitreous china, cleaning can still be a bit of a hassle. Cleaning the tub and shower walls in bathrooms may only be a once a week item while other areas may need more frequent attention, however, there are usually some tasks that seem harder than others to get sparkling clean and keep that way. If you’ve been wondering how to get rid of stubborn buildup, germs, and dirt, here are some expert tips for a clean bathroom that may help make cleanup a breeze.

    Tips For A Clean Bathroom

    1. Bathtub rings – A natural and effective way to remove that ring around the tub is to cut a grapefruit in half and pour a tablespoon of salt onto it. Then simply rub it around the ring and watch it disappear. Even the smallest details of a clean bathroom make a difference.

    2. Shower and bathtub tile surrounds – Save your back and knees by using a clean broom and cleanser, then rinse using a bucket or a shower wand. When dealing with deep dirt stains, empty the bathtub of water and fit a soft scrubbing brush onto your drill, saving yourself some elbow grease. Remove soap scum buildup on glass shower doors by rubbing a damp dryer sheet across them. Spritz diluted bleach from a spray bottle on grout lines and finish with a clean mop to remove watermarks. Don’t forget, from time to time, to throw the shower curtain, if you’re using one, into the washing machine with a little white vinegar and hang it wet to dry rather using the dryer. Remember to work smarter, not harder for your clean bathroom.

    3. Showerhead residue and germs – Simply place a plastic bag around the showerhead and fill with white vinegar. Wrap an elastic band around to secure it and leave it for an hour. Remove and rinse. Regular removal of bacteria is integral to a clean bathroom.

    4. Toilet brush – Put a little liquid disinfecting cleanser in the toilet brush holder to keep the brush ready for the next use.
Bathrooms do seem to attract dirt and grime but keeping them clean is important if you don’t want germs spreading through your home or the embarrassment of having guests needing to use a dirty bathroom. Many people are unaware about how to clean a bathroom effectively, but with a few simple tricks, you can easily keep your clean bathroom germ free and fresh.

  • 7 Items You Should Avoid Placing In Bathroom Storage

Bathroom Storage - A Good Idea?

Bathrooms are commonly used for the storage of necessary items that are good to keep close at hand. However, simply because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. In fact, there are several items that are regularly stored in bathrooms that really shouldn’t be. Take a look at this list to see what items should not be in your bathroom storage. You might be surprised at some of them.

    Toothbrush

Many people store their toothbrush in the bathroom simply because that’s where they brush their teeth. However, as you might have heard, every time the toilet is flushed, particles from it are released into the air and left to settle on, you guessed it, your toothbrush. A damp toothbrush provides a perfect environment for the breeding of bacteria. Although you may try to close the toilet lid each time, it’s not likely that everyone will do so. A safer bet is to keep your brush out of your bathroom storage.

    Medicine

Sure, bathroom storage is often labelled as a medicine cabinet, but most medicine labels specify to store them in a cool, dry place. Bathrooms are typically warm, humid environments, especially after you enjoy a nice hot shower. Storing medications in these conditions could cause pills or capsules to break down, which can result in less than ideal efficacy or potency. So, keep your medicine out of bathroom storage and instead place them in a drawer.

    Cosmetic

Like the above items, heat and humidity are not friendly to your makeup. These conditions can break down formulas and allow mold and bacteria to form in powders. Therefore, cosmetics are better stored somewhere cool and dry and away from any bathroom storage areas.

    Razors and Shavers

If shaving with a dull or rusty blade doesn’t appeal to you, then these items should be better stored in a dry location until you’re ready to use them.

    Sunblock

SPF lotions and creams can be costly and take time to apply properly, so of course you want them to be effective. However, placing them in a humid bathroom storage area can cause them to separate, be less effective, and even to mold.

    Perfumes and Aftershave

Perfumes and aftershave – A lot of things can affect the stability of your fragrances. To prevent these items from oxidizing, keep your scents out of bathroom storage and always store them at room temperature and in a dark area to preserve them.

    Additional Towels

Most people hang their towels to dry to help prevent the mold and mildew that love warm moist places. Yet those extra towels in your bathroom storage also absorb moisture, but don’t have the opportunity to dry out.

Although most of us like to keep things handy that we use for our daily get-ready routine, a cool dry cabinet that allows for storage in a bedroom or hallway would be a better solution for these seven items. Another additional benefit might be less clutter, making it easier for you to maintain a cleaner and more welcoming room to begin and end the day.
