ADA Compliant Bathrooms for Those with Special Needs

It is the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed July 26, 1990. The legislation was initiated to provide equal accessibility to employment and services to Americans who are disabled. This clearly affects a significant number of people as the latest studies report that 1 in 5 people in the U.S. has a disability, the most common being mobility limitation.

One section of the legislation addresses the accessibility requirements for public buildings, regardless of whether they're new construction or renovated. Although it isn't required for private structures, many people are using the guidelines for their homes, especially for bathrooms when they build or remodel them.

Having a home which incorporates these specifications can result in higher resale values. Additionally, as family members age they may need the use of a wheelchair or walker. Of course, everyone is at risk of having a disability at some point during their lives, if only temporarily.

Although the law encompasses many areas, a wheelchair accessible sink and countertop is certainly a major one and has many considerations.  A person with a disability may use a sink to support themselves and therefore it must be stable and smooth to prevent injuries. Mounting the sink on a wall is best to allow clear floor space so a wheelchair can roll past it. Under sinks, pipes must be insulated. DECOLAV’s 1833-SSA or the 1835-SSA are the perfect example of ADA Compliance with built in grab bars, combining style and ease of use.

Mounting heights and widths are specified which allow for knee clearance and also depth for toe space. Additionally, it is suggested that the faucet handles should be push, lever or electronically controlled and easily used with one hand. Mirrors should be hung at stated heights or a full length one installed.

Allowing everyone equal access to bathrooms seems an obvious necessity, yet prior to the passage of the ADA, this was only one of the numerous challenges that people with disabilities faced.
