The Comfort of Your Bathroom

Comfort has been defined as a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint. Feeling like there’s a safe, cozy, warm and relaxing place waiting for us after a long day is one of our most important values. Hildegard Peplau, known as the mother of psychiatric nursing, regarded comfort as a fundamental human need. If so, perhaps it’s time to examine the importance of comfort of your bathroom.

The personal environment has been demonstrated to have a significant effect on well-being. Therefore, it’s key to put some consideration into designing and decorating your bathroom to make it your own space, personal and unique to your own style.

In order to provide a sanctuary from stress, your bathroom should be physically comfortable and pleasing to your senses. So how do you make your bathroom a space that is calming to the senses yet offers visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile stimuli? As legendary decorator Billy Baldwin stated, “no room is comfortable until there are things to sit upon, put upon, and gaze upon."

Following these considerations, begin by making sure that the view from the doorway sets an inviting tone. Add warmth to your walls or choose colors that are soothing and calm. Adding a low-light, low-maintenance houseplant can add an element of natural beauty and help purify the air too.

Keep visual clutter to a minimum, choosing only a few select items of interesting art or décor items. Then, ensure the room stays uncluttered by adding adequate storage to tuck personal grooming items away.

Music improves mood, benefits overall well-being, and can help create happiness and relaxation, so why not put some in your bathroom? Think about a shower radio, or some waterproof bathroom speakers and listen to your favorite tunes.

Next, some scented candles, essential oil diffusers, an incense burner, or potpourri can enhance your mood, alleviate stress and even help you to get to sleep. However, the aroma of fresh flowers can’t be beat. For gorgeous color and fragrance there’s nothing like an attractive vase filled with fresh flowers.

Then, go overboard with soft towels and rugs. Consider a round rug to soften the bathroom’s typically straight and harsh lines. Then if space allows, consider adding a cushioned bench or comfortable chair in which to linger.

Lighting can have a major effect on the atmosphere of your bathroom. Larger windows and lighter window coverings allow more natural light. Additionally, consider adding a dimmer switch in order to adjust the levels of brightness. The light you may need to apply makeup or shave may be much brighter than desirable for a relaxing soak in the tub.

Just remember, it’s all about creating a room that feels right for you. Your bathroom can help you de-stress after a hectic day or give you a terrific place to start a great new day. Even the smallest changes can make a big difference, and you can make your bathroom a comforting room that you won’t want to leave.
